PR NEWSWIRE -- Jan 14 -- TRUE.com congratulates New Jersey legislators for yesterday enacting the nation's first online dating legislation. The Internet Dating Safety Act (Senate Bill-1977/A4304) requires online dating services to disclose their criminal background screening practices and to offer safer dating tips on their sites. When registering for membership on TRUE, all users must represent that they have not been convicted of a felony or of a sexual offense and that they are not married.

I have been unable to confirm if the NJ Governor has signed the bill, enacting it and making it law.

According to the NJ State Legislature website, Bills A4304 and S1977, known as the 'Internet Dating Safety Act' passed the NJ State Assembly and the NJ State Senate on January 7. The last remark was on January 13, which says '1/13/2008 Approved P.L.2007, c.272.'

I would assume P.L. could be the markup committee. It is unlikely it is the initials for the Governor, who has to sign it to become law.

It can also be the site is not updated. Governments do that from time to time and update 2-3 days later.

Peter McGreevy will discuss this at the next iDate conference about what this means.
